Apple launched its big foray into generative AI on Monday with the introduction of its Apple Intelligence platform at the Worldwide Developers Conference. However, users with an iPhone 15 or older models will miss this new feature.
New AI features require the latest hardware
Apple has announced that only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, along with future iPhones, will support the Apple Intelligence platform. This is due to the advanced processors in these models, which are required to handle the AI software. The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, despite being released at the same time, contain older, less capable chips.
This development is likely to be disappointing for those who bought an iPhone 15 and expected it to support the latest software updates for a reasonable period of time. Nevertheless, Apple may benefit by forcing users to purchase its high-end models to access these AI capabilities.
Monetizing the AI trend
Apple is integrating its Apple Intelligence software into existing apps such as Photos and Messages, significantly enhancing Siri’s functionality with AI models, including support for OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This comprehensive upgrade is expected to encourage users with older iPhones to consider an upgrade sooner.
Addressing the lifespan of iPhones
One challenge Apple faces is the longevity of its iPhones. According to a 2023 survey by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, 61% of iPhone users had had their previous iPhones for two or more years, and 29% had had their previous iPhones for three years or more. Additionally, UBS analyst David Vogt reported that the average age of iPhones among users in the US, UK, China, Germany and Japan is 21 months.
By limiting AI features to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, Apple is encouraging faster upgrades, potentially shortening the typical replacement cycle. BofA Global Research analyst Wamsi Mohan noted that Apple Intelligence could drive stronger replacement dynamics.
Ensure a successful implementation
Apple Intelligence has yet to be released to users, and its impact on sales will depend on how well Apple delivers on its promises. Other tech giants like Microsoft and Google have faced challenges with their AI offerings and had to make adjustments based on consumer feedback and security concerns.
Apple will need to avoid similar pitfalls to ensure its AI products don’t discourage potential upgrades. The success of Apple Intelligence during its beta phase and eventual release this fall will reveal whether it can entice users to buy their next iPhone based on its new software capabilities.
